Innovative projects earn funding from textiles association

Two graduate students in the Nanostructured Materials Laboratory have received funding from the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists for ongoing research projects.

Raha Saremi, a Ph.D. student and graduate research assistant within the textiles, merchandising and interiors department, received funds for her project that involves an environmentally friendly dyeing technique that uses nano-cellulose gels that would eliminate the need for a significant amount of water.

Darya Asheghali, a student in the UGA department of chemistry, received funding for her project that studies enzyme stability on PGMA (polyglycidyl methacrylate) nanofibers, which has potential implications for drug delivery and other biomedical purposes.

Because of the quality of the proposed work, both students have been encouraged to enter the AATCC’s Herman and Myrtle Goldstein Student Paper Competition next year.

Sergiy Minko, the Georgia Power Professor of Fiber and Polymer Science within FACS and director of the NSML, serves as both students’ major professor.
